Product Linguist

SUMMARY:

You will be working on industry-leading speech recognition technology. Our product linguists apply linguistics and machine learning knowledge to make and deliver speech recognition that is deployed across the world. We want a linguist who has experience making data-driven decisions, is able to juggle multiple projects and priorities, and is very organized. Our work requires constant learning and the ability to focus on problems until they are resolved. We are looking for a linguist with technical experience and good analytical skills who is excited about producing new products for consumer electronics.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Use company-internal tools to tune speech recognition sets for consumer electronics products.
• Participate in detailed investigations of voice recognition performance for customer and internal projects.
• Work with Sensory engineers to deliver projects vocabularies, translations, speech prompts, etc. on schedule.
• Develop, review, test, and improve linguistic components of speech recognition and synthesis systems.
• Assist product developers in recognition parameter tuning and user interface design.
• Participate in detailed investigations of voice recognition performance for customer and internal projects.
• Interact with customers to provide guidance on dialogue design and recognition set makeup for optimal speech recognition success.

PRIMARY SKILLS / SPECIALITY / TECHNICAL SKILLS:

• Excellent understanding of phonological and phonetic concepts.
• Experience using tools such as Audition, Peak, Sound Forge, or Praat.
• Knowledge of WorldBet or SAMPA.
• Programming skills in a scripting language is a strong plus but not required.
• Fluency in at least one foreign language preferred.
• Ability to interpret spectrograms and transcribe in IPA.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• B.A. / B.S. or higher degree in Linguistics
• 3-5 years total job experience with demonstrated focus in linguistics required
• Fluency in at least one foreign language
• Excellent understanding of phonological and phonetic concepts
• Ability to interpret a spectrogram
• Computer literate
• Ability to work independently

PREFERENCES:

• 2-3 years of experience in the field
