Voices from the Vault: 30+ Years of Sensory’s Most Exciting Voice Tech Adventures

Sensory recently hosted a special live webinar celebrating more than three decades of pioneering work in on-device voice technology. Moderated by Amanda Defelice, the session brought together Todd Mozer, Sensory’s Chairman and CEO, and Jeff Rogers, Sensory’s VP of Sales and Marketing, for a nostalgic yet forward-looking conversation about Sensory’s innovations—from toy-store beginnings to powering billions of devices around the world.

From Toys to Tech Titans

As Todd & Jeff  recalled, Sensory’s story started in 1994, “selling chips in the toy industry.” Back then, “speech recognition” often meant crude approaches entailing amplitude detection or toll free numbers to coach people how to talk, and some with tapes included! A far cry from the neural net approach Sensory introduced in 1994!

Sensory’s first chip, the RSC-164, had just 2K of SRAM and 64K of ROM. Jeff said “That history of running on really small architectures has allowed us to run across a lot of different platforms, and that opened the door to what we do today.”

Even in those early days, Sensory was using neural networks. “People thought it was weird,” Todd laughed. “They’d ask, ‘Why are you using neural nets for speech recognition?’ And of course, that’s the big thing now.”

Early Hits and Oddities

One of Sensory’s biggest early successes was the GirlTech Password Journal, a voice-protected diary that became a ’90s icon. “One in three pre-teen girls in the U.S. owned or played with that product,” Jeff shared. Todd added, “We actually improved the speaker verification and offered it to Radica for free—but they turned it down because girls liked to use it as a game to see if their friends could break in!”

From there, the conversation turned to some of Sensory’s strangest projects: a voice-controlled toaster, a dog bark interpreter, and even a holiday favorite from Mr. Christmas, where users could say, “Hello Mr. Christmas, play Jingle Bells.” As Todd recalled, “We still use that one every December.”

Breaking New Ground in Voice UX

Sensory’s early focus on tiny hardware led to major breakthroughs in consumer electronics. When Bluetooth headsets first hit the market, they were plagued with poor usability: “The return rates were 30%–35%. People couldn’t figure out what the beeps and flashes meant. The input control was a few buttons that could be held for varying time periods”

Sensory’s solution was BlueGenie, a natural voice interface that transformed headset usability. “It was such a breakthrough user experience,” Todd said. “You could even link to Google 411 or Bing 411—it was one of the earliest uses of a voice interface to get information from the cloud.”

The focus on software led to design wins at all the major CE players – Amazon, Apple, Google, LG, Microsoft, Samsung and hundreds of others from Go Pro cameras to Garmin products.

Looking Back—and Ahead

From those humble beginnings to today’s advanced wake words and speech-to-text technologies, Sensory continues to lead the way in private, low-power, and embedded voice AI. As Todd put it, “We’ve always focused on delivering voice technology that respects privacy, runs efficiently, and works everywhere.”
