Goal

What the Team Set Out to Achieve

Nextbase set out to bring hands-free voice control to its dash cam lineup, starting with the newly launched Piqo. The goal was to let drivers activate key features, such as Witness Mode, without ever taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. The solution needed to run entirely on-device, work reliably in a moving vehicle, support deployment in a range of modern languages and regional dialects, and lay the groundwork for voice control across future Nextbase products.

Challenge

What Stood in the Way

Nextbase needed a voice control solution that could hold up inside a car: road noise, wind, music, and cabin chatter all threaten wake word and command accuracy. The solution also had to work entirely without a cloud connection, since dash cams need to function reliably wherever a driver goes, and had to fit within the compact, power-conscious Piqo hardware while still supporting global markets and languages.

Outcome

What Changed After Implementation

Nextbase launched the Piqo, the first in a planned line of dash cams to feature Sensory’s technology, giving drivers full voice control over the device. Speaking a wake phrase now lets Piqo owners trigger features like Witness Mode entirely hands-free, with no manual operation required. Sensory’s voice technology has since extended to the Nextbase iQ line as well, bringing hands-free control across a broader share of Nextbase’s product portfolio.

Key outcomes included:

  •     Fully hands-free operation behind the wheel
  •     On-device processing with no cloud dependency
  •     A proven foundation for voice control across future Nextbase dash cams

How Sensory helped Nextbase bring safer, hands-free voice control to its dash cam lineup.

How the Partnership Began

From Concept to Collaboration

Nextbase had initially been working with another vendor on its voice control needs, but ultimately turned to Sensory to bring the Piqo and iQ’s voice-activated features to life. The Sensory and Nextbase teams worked closely to define an experience that felt natural for drivers while meeting the strict reliability demands of an in-vehicle environment.

  • Evaluated wake word and phrase-spotted command performance for in-vehicle use
  • Selected Sensory’s on-device architecture requiring no cloud connectivity
  • Prioritized language flexibility to support global markets
  • Aligned on voice control as a core safety and usability feature of the Piqo

Challenges Overcome

What Sensory Helped Solve

  • Reliable wake word and command recognition amid road noise, wind, and cabin audio
  • Delivering full functionality with no cloud connection required
  • Supporting a range of modern languages (English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, and more) and regional dialects (e.g., British vs. American English, French Canadian vs. general French) across a globally sold product line
  • Fitting voice control into a compact, power-efficient device

The Solution

How Sensory Made It Work

By integrating Sensory’s wake word and phrase-spotting command technologies, Nextbase gave Piqo users the ability to activate features like Witness Mode, Protect, and Privacy Mode simply by speaking, entirely hands-free and without ever touching the device.

Core components included:

  • Always-on wake word detection tuned for in-vehicle noise conditions
  • Phrase spotted commands for fast, structured voice control
  • Fully on-device processing, with no cloud connection required
  • A language-flexible design built for global deployment

Highlights

Why This Case Stands Out

  • Voice control built in as a core safety feature, not an add-on
  • Proven performance in the noisy, unpredictable acoustics of a moving vehicle
  • Entirely on-device, cloud-free operation
  • The first release in a planned multi-product voice rollout across Nextbase’s dash cam lineup

Conclusion & Testimonial

Sensory's wake word and voice command technology is a key component in making our dashcams not just compact and powerful, but also incredibly user-friendly. This partnership enhances our ability to provide unmatched value and safety to our customers.
