Driving Innovation: Sensory and Panasonic Automotive’s Hands-Free Future – Webinar Recap

In a recent webinar, Sensory was joined by Andrew Poliak, CTO of Panasonic Automotive. Andrew provided insights into the problems Panasonic Automotive solves with hands-free technologies and their rigorous testing and review methods. Attendees were treated to an exclusive preview of Panasonic Automotive’s hands-free, frustration-free, trunk open/close feature, which is powered by Sensory’s TrulyHandsFree technology. Andrew and Sensory’s Jeff Rogers, VP of Sales and Marketing, also looked at the latest advancements in comprehensive voice assistant technologies, such as bespoke wake words, speech-to-text, automotive language models, and natural language processing, all of which run fully within the vehicle. Industry-Wide Problem:

The discussion began by highlighting the frustration many face with kick sensors, which often fail to work consistently, especially when carrying items or in adverse weather conditions. This led to the exploration of a more reliable and user-friendly alternative.

Introducing “Speech Powered Open-Close” (S.P.O.C.):

Panasonic Automotive solution, aptly named S.P.O.C., allows users to simply walk up to their vehicle and verbally command the tailgate, trunk, or door to open or close. This is achieved through a combination of key fob detection, exterior microphones, and Sensory’s  TrulyHandsfree technology. With the ability to simply walk up to a vehicle and command it to open or close, users no longer need to fumble with keys or struggle to find the right gesture for kick sensors.

Key Features:

  • Authentication through the key fob ensures that only authorized individuals can activate the system.
  • Exterior and interior microphones for clear command recognition from various positions around the vehicle.
  • Ability to understand multiple languages and commands from up to 2 meters away.
  • Low power consumption, ensuring minimal impact on vehicle batteries.

Advantages Over Existing Solutions:

Compared to other methods like hover systems or kick sensors, S.P.O.C. offers several key advantages:

  • Full hands-free operation, ideal for when your hands are full.
  • Improved reliability and responsiveness, even in challenging conditions like wind or noise.
  • Enhanced accessibility for individuals with mobility issues, making it easier for them to access their vehicles independently.
  • Easy installation and integration with existing vehicle systems.

Security and Customization:

To address security concerns, S.P.O.C. utilizes the key fob for authentication. Additionally, there’s potential for further security enhancements, such as voice biometrics, which could allow for individualized voice commands. Beyond the immediate advantages over traditional kick sensors, its implementation could lead to broader implications for the automotive industry.

Conclusion:

Sensory’s TrulyHandsFree and Panasonic’s S.P.O.C. represent more than just a solution to a common automotive problem; they represent a step forward in the evolution of vehicle technology. Its ability to enhance the user experience, improve safety and accessibility, and integrate with smart home technology makes it a valuable addition to the automotive industry. As S.P.O.C. continues to evolve and possibly integrate even more of Sensory’s technology, it is poised to redefine how we interact with our vehicles, making the driving experience safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable for all.
