Every angler who films knows the problem. The best moment of the trip, the strike, happens in a split second. By the time you reach for the record button, it’s gone.
The usual workaround is to record constantly. That fills your phone’s storage and drains the battery long before the fishing day is over.
Ok Camera, developed by Brazilian app developer Felipe Melo, addresses this with a rolling pre-record buffer and hands-free voice control. Well-known Brazilian professional angler Eduardo Monteiro promotes the app in Brazil, including on FishTV, a fishing television channel.
Anglers turn on pre-recording and choose a 15- or 30-second buffer. Then they mount the phone, on a neck mount, for example, and go back to fishing.
When a fish strikes, they simply say “Okay, Camera.” The app saves the 30 seconds before the command, then keeps recording through the fight. A second “Okay, Camera” stops the recording after the release.
No buttons, no wet hands on the screen, and no lost strikes.
This video shows it in action. He fights and releases a fish, says the command twice, and the clip opens with the strike he would have missed before. He also notes that his cameraman can now use a phone as a reliable second or emergency camera on his show.
The voice command is the heart of this experience, and that’s where Sensory comes in. Ok Camera uses Sensory’s wake word technology to recognize “Okay, Camera” directly on the phone.
That matters on the water. Because recognition happens on the device, the command doesn’t depend on a cell signal, which can be hard to find on the water. And a spoken command keeps both hands on the rod at the moment the fish strikes.
As the video points out, action cameras are great but not accessible to everyone. Nearly everyone has a phone. Voice control makes that phone a hands-free action camera.
We are developing more hands-free features for upcoming versions of Ok Camera. These include voice activation of native iPhone camera functions from within the app and customizable voice commands. Both are in development and are planned for future releases.
